The Dying Art of Letter Writing

07/12/2021

A lovely client of mine is writing a biography about her parents, based on their letters to each other which span three continents and as many decades.

Both were renowned botanists and the stories they tell are full of love and adventure.  Pondering the best way to present their writing made me think how it was rather a shame that the 'epistolary' form of memoir or biography will, in the not-too-distant future, be a forgotten art.

When we stopped writing letters, new forms of communication rushed to fill the void.  You don't need to visit the Post Office to send an email, and why put pen to paper when a text is so much faster?  But then a story like 84 Charing Cross Road would never have worked as a series of WhatsApp messages... or would it?
